A Happy Ending

princess-bride

In dreams, he saw her standing there
knocking on his door
In peasant’s robe she came to him
barefoot after war

A subject hurled into blunt winds
Her golden hair marred with dirt
A child she once played beside
Consumed by a world of hurt

“All along the watchtower”
Soldiers’ guns did beat
She sought a pauper’s hand
A princess masked in defeat

In his house he took her
To feed her weary soul
He sought no recompense
Only to make her whole

He bathed her with warmth
Washing dirt from her face
For those who knew her identity
would think her in wrong time and place

No such thought to her occurred
As this pauper took her hand
He healed her wounded skin
Without condition or demand

And in his comfort of her wounds
A princess became much more
For in this day she became one
Her heart’s key freed in a pauper’s door

Upon her castle’s return
The princess received much sympathy
Her constituents gathered ’round
Forever lost in acatalepsy

They could not understand
How in a pauper’s care
A princess found true happiness
Her love for a pauper so dear

“And all the king’s horses
And all the king’s men”
Would lock her up on high
Her spotted mind to mend

Imprisoned in an earthen tower
Her pauper threw a rope
Descending steep stone walls
Into his arms she would elope

To escape outside of boundary
Beyond forest’s edge
A pauper carried a princess
with only love as his pledge

The moment he first cared for her
without recognition of her face
was the moment a prince and a pauper
became one in universal grace

And a princess became his queen
A stone castle to forsake
Priceless their life together
in a humble cottage by the lake

The End
